PERKINS DOMINATES BELLEVUE 42-14 IN REGIONAL QUARTERFINAL VICTORY
PERKINS TOWNSHIP — Powered by a performance from quarterback Grant Kuhnle and an explosive aerial attack, the Perkins Pirates rolled past the Bellevue Redmen 42-14 in the regional quarterfinals on Friday night.
Kuhnle was dynamic all evening, delivering a 6-touchdown night—5 through the air and 1 on the ground. He completed 19 of his 24 pass attempts for 316 yards without throwing an interception. He also added 43 yards on 4 carries, leading the team in rushing.
From the opening kickoff, the Pirates set a blistering tempo, racking up 390 total yards at an explosive 8.9 yards per play while holding Bellevue’s offense in check for most of the night.
After driving inside the Bellevue 5-yard line on their opening possession, Kuhnle capped off the march with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Logan Wadsworth at the 6:46 mark. Less than four minutes later, Kuhnle struck again, connecting with Bryce Davie on a 16-yard strike to extend the lead to 14-0 before the first quarter clock ran out.
Bellevue showed signs of life late in the second quarter when Ike Brown punched in a 13-yard touchdown run with 54 seconds remaining before halftime, trimming the deficit to 14-7.
On the very next drive, Kuhnle uncorked a rainbow down the field to Kaden Legando, who hauled it in and outran the secondary for a breath-taking 73-yard touchdown strike. Kannyn Henson booted his third extra point of the night, sending Perkins into the locker room with a comfortable 21-7 cushion.
Taking the second-half opening drives, Kuhnle showcased his dual-threat capability at the 7:22 mark of the third quarter, pulling down the snap and tearing through the Redmen defense on a 37-yard touchdown sprint.
Five minutes later, Kuhnle found Davie in the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown—Davie’s second score of the evening—stretching the Pirates' lead to 35-7. Davie ended his night with a game-high eight receptions for 106 yards.
Kuhnle put the finishing touches on his career night early in the fourth period, connecting with Paul Keys for a 58-yard bomb to push the score to 42-7. Keys finished with four catches for 93 yards, while Legando added 104 yards on five grabs.
Bellevue tacked on a late 2-yard touchdown pass from Caden Cramer to Ike Brown with 1:10 left on the clock, but the outcome had long been decided.
The Pirates advance to the Regional Semifinals at undefeated Shelby next Friday night.
